Masala Dosa Recipe | Breakfast Care

Dosa has had many variations over the time but the most popular remains plain dosa and masala dosa. 
Masala Dosa is one of the popular South Indian delicacies. It is a simple and comfort food that you can eat for breakfast, lunch, snack, brunch or even dinner. It is best served with coconut chutney and sambar.

For The Batter:
  • 2 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup urad dal
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
For The Stuffing:
  • 1/2 kilograms potato, boiled
  • 1.5 cups onion, sliced
  • 2 green chilli, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 cup water
  • A handful of curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt, as per taste


1. Wash and soak the rice and urad dal in separate containers for approximately 6-8 hours.

2. Once the rice and urad dal are soaked well, grind them separately in a mixer using the water in which they were soaked till the mixture gets a smooth consistency. 

3. Take the batter of both the ingredients in a bigger container and add salt to it. Mix well and allow it to ferment overnight.

4. On next day, heat oil in pan.

5. Splutter the mustard seeds. Add sliced onions, curry leaves, green chillies and saute them till the onions turn pink.

6. Add a pinch of salt and turmeric powder and mix them well.

7. Add them to the sauteed onions and mix them together. Pour some water into the mixture and allow the potatoes to simmer the mixture for around 4 minutes. 

8. Heat a dosa tawa on low-medium flame. 

9. Smear a little oil on it to prepare the dosa.

10. Once hot, pour and spread the batter evenly into a circular motion.

11. While the colour of dosa's edges turns into brown, reduce the flame and sprinkle few drops of oil on the dosa sides.

12. Put 2 tablespoons of filling and fold the dosa.

13. Serve hot immediately.

14. Enjoy!
